Five Ways to Style a Console Table

A console table is often one of the first surfaces we see when entering a room. It can set the tone for everything around it, but the most successful arrangements usually rely on restraint rather than quantity.

1. Start with an anchor

Choose one larger element to establish the composition: a mirror, artwork, lamp or sculptural object. This gives smaller pieces something to relate to and prevents the surface from feeling like a collection of unrelated accessories.

2. Vary the height

Combine tall, medium and low forms. A lamp or vase can provide height, while books, trays and smaller objects create lower layers. Avoid lining everything up at the same level.

3. Leave negative space

Not every centimetre needs to be styled. Empty space gives individual objects more presence and is one of the simplest ways to make an arrangement feel more refined.

4. Introduce texture

Contrast smooth and tactile surfaces: timber with ceramic, stone with metal, linen with glass. A restrained colour palette becomes more interesting when the materials themselves do some of the work.

5. Change one element, not everything

A console can evolve through the year without being completely restyled. Change the stems in a vase, swap a book or introduce a single seasonal object while keeping the underlying composition intact.

The objective is a surface that feels personal and considered — collected over time rather than assembled all at once.
